Anxiety and Panic

Anxiety is normal - But sometimes it can take over

Everyone feels anxious from time to time. It’s a normal response to situations like job interviews, public speaking, exams, or medical tests.

But for some people, anxiety doesn’t go away. The worries can feel constant, overwhelming, and hard to control — even when there’s no obvious reason. I know what that’s like. I used to be one of them

What is General Anxiety Disorder (GAD)?

Generalised Anxiety Disorder is a long-term condition where anxiety becomes a daily experience. Rather than being linked to one specific event, it shows up across many situations — work, relationships, health, and the future.

The difference between everyday worry and GAD is that this type of anxiety feels excessive, intrusive, and persistent. It can feel like your thoughts are running the show — and your body is stuck in alert mode.

The good news is: anxiety is treatable. With the right tools, support, and commitment, it really can get better.

What About Panic Attacks or Panic Disorder?

Not all anxiety looks like constant worry. For some people, it shows up as sudden waves of panic — intense, frightening, and often out of the blue. These episodes are called panic attacks, and they can feel overwhelming both physically and emotionally.

You might experience:

  • A racing heart or tight chest
  • Feeling dizzy or lightheaded
  • Difficulty breathing or a sense of choking
  • Shaking, sweating, or nausea
  • Fear of losing control, fainting, or even dying

Panic Disorder is when these panic attacks become a recurring fear — not just of the panic itself, but of when it might happen next. This can lead to avoiding situations like public transport, supermarkets, or being far from home.

The good news is that panic disorder is highly treatable. CBT techniques can help you understand what’s happening in your body and brain, break the cycle of fear, and regain your confidence. You don’t have to live in fear of panic.

How Can Therapy Help

In sessions with me, you’ll find a calm and non-judgmental space to make sense of your anxiety — where it started, what’s keeping it going, and how to move forward.

Together, we can work on:

  • Understanding your triggers and why your anxiety shows up the way it does
  • Learning practical coping strategies to manage uncertainty and reduce overwhelm
  • Practising relaxation and grounding techniques to calm your nervous system
  • Identifying and challenging unhelpful thinking patterns
  • Finding alternative ways of thinking that feel more balanced — and more believable over time

Anxiety doesn’t have to run your life. If you’re ready to make a change, I’d be glad to support you.
